Introduction to the Individual Who Has No Idea What Is Going On
Hello! My name is Corona Anderson and I'm a senior at the University of Oklahoma. I am a Letters and Religious Studies dual major, which, in my opinion, has some of the most interesting courses in the University. Letters is a combination of History, Philosophy and Literature with two different languages. The languages that I have included in my majors are Spanish and Latin. In regards to my Religious Studies major, I have mostly focused on Islam and Roman religion.
I'm originally from Baltimore, Maryland but I mostly reside in Norman now. I have been living in Norman for the past four years due to the requirement of living on campus for freshman year and then being a Residential Adviser for the past three. I do plan to come back to the job next year as well if I am rehired. Honestly, being a RA has helped me expand my social groups and interest over the past few years. My first year with the international floor is what kind of led me on the path to being more interested in different cultures and what spurred me to study different religions because I was exposed to so many.
I have three cats named Pyg, Seamus and Bronson. Over the winter break, I went to Florida with the Pride of Oklahoma. This last year was my fourth and final year as a trumpet player. I was able to try oysters while I was there and absolutely fell in love with them. One of my hobbies is actually seeking out new food and trying it. This hobby is setting up my future because I wish to travel in order to try new cuisines and learn different cultures. Other hobbies of mine are knitting, crocheting and baking/cooking. I'm currently knitting a scarf and crocheting a hat. I also highly enjoy gardening and am currently raising orchids and other types of tricky plants.
If I had more time to enjoy, I would read more in all honestly. I used to read quite a bit when I was younger and my favorite book is The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom. A majority of the time I listen to music so I have many favorites that range from classical to metal. I feel that my confusion about the future and the current time resides in the lack of reading I do. There is much more but nothing I can really put into a coherent thought on this page. But like I said in the title. . . I have no idea what is going on.
Hi Corona!
ReplyDeleteI would first like to focus on Pyg, Seamus and Bronson. Where do all these names come from? Did you get them all together? Or over a span of time?
What is your favorite food? Are you a fill-the-time knitter? Like do you carry it around or do you leave it at home? Literally every knitter I know fills every free moment with knitting. What metal bands do you like? My boyfriend is a huge metal fan so I know a bit.
Hi Corona! I had a friend who was an RA before recently graduating and she loved it! Not only is it a great way to meet people but also help others! I also think it is cool you play the trumpet! I used to play the violin but I always wished I played a wind instrument. I actually chose to play in 5th grade because it was either that or chorus and the violin seemed like the easiest option, but I actually ended up playing into my second year of college. I hope to going back and playing when I have more time. I really enjoyed reading your blog, and look forward to reading more from you in the future :)
ReplyDeleteHi Corona,
ReplyDeleteI was just wondering whether people ever make dumb puns about your name? People always make jokes about my name (tbh I make a lot of jokes myself as well). Also, gardening is a really interesting hobby, I try to keep plants alive, however, the only ones I've been able to so far are very hardy succulents, so I'm very impressed that you're able to deal with orchids. What are some other tricky plants you've been dealing with?
I couldn't ever imaging travelling so much for band, but it sounds like a blast and a time you will remember for the rest of your life! I used to be a cat lady until I adopted a dog after working for a vet for a year, I'm surprised you have three! I love that you have a passion for learning about other religions and cultures, I always tell myself I'd be open to learning more about others but I never take the initiative to do it. Classical to Metal is quite the range, but coming from somebody who doesn't have a favorite genre and listens to almost everything, I see where you're coming from!
ReplyDeleteHi Corona,
ReplyDeleteIt was so great reading your introduction and getting to know you! Your background is so interesting, and I love that you have three cats. How are you able to keep them with you if you are a resident advisor? Same with the plants! I never stayed in the dorms, so I have no idea how much space they give you. It is so great that you are a religious studies minor. I was planning on doing that minor as well, but I didn't think I'd have enough time. I hope that this course gives you a new perspective since it is outside of the range you have normally been studying!
Hi Corona~
ReplyDeleteThanks for the explanation of what Letters is. I've definitely heard of it but had no idea what it was. I've been to Maryland for a hot minute, I was driving from the airport to DC but what I saw seemed nice! I also love reading but never have enough time. When I was packing up my room after high school I had two boxes filled with books. But ever since I started at OU I've had the bad habit of starting a book and never finishing it (unless it's a required reading). Hopefully one day I'll be able to get back to reading.
Oh my gosh, a fennec fox: what an amazing picture, Corona! I always use a fox for my social media avatar (in honor of the trickster foxes of Aesop's fables)... and sometimes I use a fennec fox, but I have never been up close to one like that before. That is so cool! And of course I am curious about your cats with these intriguing names of Pyg, Seamus and Bronson... maybe you will add pictures of them to the "Pet Padlet" -- Padlet Tech Tips, which is a fun way to do an extra credit Tech Tip thing. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat combination of Religious Studies and Letters is powerful. The Letters major has been around at OU for a long time (I was originally a Latin professor in Classics & Letters when I came to OU in 1999, before I switched to teaching online)... but Religious Studies is something new to OU, and watching that program grow has been really exciting.
And since you have cats AND you know Latin, I have to share with you the Latin LOLCats: link to the Latin Cats. Before there were Growth Mindset Cats, yes, there were Latin LOLCats. I don't teach Latin anymore, but Latin is so much fun that I couldn't just give i up completely. Gaudeas! :-)
I’m also a senior and wish you the best of luck, especially since you’re dual majoring. That’s awesome, but I just couldn’t put myself through that. I see that you like to read, and I absolutely encourage that! I’m also a huge book nerd, and that’s probably the part of that’s excited about that, but still! Also, sometimes not knowing what’s going on is the best opportunity to learn new things.
ReplyDeleteThe animal in the picture is too cute! Congratulations on becoming a senior! I definitely feel your level of excitement as I am a senior as well! I think it is so awesome that you are dual majoring! That takes so much commitment and dedication! I think it is great that you are an animal lover as well. 3 cats seems like a very fun and entertaining household!
ReplyDeleteHi Corona! I believe I commented earlier but I will again lol I'm a senior as well and I'm so ready! Not that I haven't enjoyed my time at OU or that I'm not nervous about the future, but I am read for that next step! It is actually surreal I am done with undergrad.. It feels so long but has gone by so fast! I'm always looking for book recs so I will check that one out :)
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow (former) trumpet player, I salute you, Corona! However, these lips have gotten soft from lack of practice...but I'm always excited to meet another trumpet player. Letters sounds like a really cool major; one of my housemates was actually a Letters major! He got the opportunity to learn Arabic, and now he is studying it in Egypt. It's awesome that you have so much exposure to international culture!
ReplyDeleteHi Corona I enjoyed reading your introduction post! Super cool that you are a trumpet player in the Pride of Oklahoma! I am music major here in the school of music so I know how many hours you guys practice. I am dual major as well so I can relate to you plenty. Too many classes to take and not enough semesters to take them in haha. I like how you title your posts and stories they're risky and thats always fun! A lot of people dont take enough risks honestly, me being one of them! Wish you the best in the rest of your studies here at OU!
ReplyDeleteHi Corona,
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who is a Letters major, and he is the first person I met with that major, and now, I think you are the second person I met who is a Letters major! If you do not mind me asking, what do you plan to do with your dual degree in Letters and Religious Studies? I also really want to travel as well, so hopefully my job will let me do that in the future too!
Hey Corona,
ReplyDeleteWow, you must be pretty busy! Double Majoring, two foreign languages, being a pride member and traveling, being an RA and have three cats!! I do think the Letters major is a really cool one. My freshman year, two people on my hall told me their major and I had no idea what that was but once they explained it, I was greatly fascinated. Especially since you get to learn more languages. Wish you the best!
Hi Corona! First off your name makes me want to grab a beer right now, but I'm sure you hear that all the time haha. I am really impressed that you are double majoring; I feel like I have no time as is with just my regular course load, but you have 2 majors and kids to look after in the dorms! How did you like growing up in Baltimore; it's a city I have always wanted to visit but have never had the chance :(
ReplyDeleteHey Corona!
ReplyDeleteI am also from Maryland! :) I haven't encountered many other people at OU from there, so it is lovely to make your acquaintance. My twin brother goes to school at UMBC, so I have had an excuse to explore Baltimore a lot more recently (I grew up in Rockville). Letters sounds like a wonderful combination of subjects! I would love to be able to take more language classes here at OU and am jealous you are doing two for your major! I've always wanted to learn how to knit and crochet, and I think it is super cool that you are able to make your own cozy garments!
Hey Corona, cool to see another Letter major. One of the things I personally love the most about majoring in letter is the freedom that this major allows. I also find literature and philosophy classes one of the most enjoyable classes to take. One of my favorite literature classes was Dostoevsky and His age. We got to read his 4 greatest works and I enjoyed every single one. I also think its cool that you tried oysters and liked them. Oysters are banging. Hands down one of my favorite things to eat. Lastly, I think its dope you're studying different religions, and that being on the international floor is what opened your eyes to different cultures. Have a good semester.
ReplyDeleteHi Corona, I admire your diverse academic pursuits. I had no idea that letters covered so many subjects. Latin is such a great language; I hope you enjoy learning it. It is cool that you decided to add a major because you were intrigued by the different cultures of the students on the international floor. Nice to meet you Corona!
ReplyDeleteHi, Corona! It’s so nice to finally meet you! I think it’s so cool that you’re double majoring in Letters and Religious studies. I took human geography when I was in high school, and I thought it was really interesting learning about different cultures and religions. I’m currently taking Latin 2 for my major, and I’m struggling a little bit in class. In my opinion, it’s probably a harder language to learn.
ReplyDeleteHi Corona!
ReplyDeleteI actually thought about being a Letters major for a while! I agree, it’s one of the degrees that gives you the most flexibility while still providing you with one of the more “classical” college educations. I think it’s really cool that you enjoy gardening! That’s something I’ve always meant to start doing, but it’s really hard to have plants when you’re moving around a lot, so I just haven’t found the time. Also, let me know if you want any book recommendations! I have a whole list of books that I love!
Hey Corona,
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was a freshman and one of my friends was a Letters major. It was just a bunch of us just spelling out the A, B, Cs when he would talk about it. But when he actually described what the major was it was pretty cool. It provides a unique breadth of knowledge that you might not be able to get without the major. He wants to go to law school with his major, but I'm interested in what you would do with it. Where does a Letters/Religious Studies dual major end up?
Corona, I really thought your introduction was interesting. I'm a religious studies minor and I think that it is great that you are majoring in it. If I had more time I would love to major in it. Your letters major sound interesting as well and I think it is great that you are majoring in it. Thanks for sharing some about yourself, it was great getting to know you some through your post!
ReplyDeleteHey Corona,
ReplyDeleteIt was nice to read your blog! I think it is really cool you have been seeking out new food, I try and do the same thing and I try to introduce my friends to new food as well! I am always fascinated with letters majors because I think it is a really cool degree that people don’t know about! What are your plans for after graduation?
Hi Corona,
ReplyDeleteIt’s nice to meet you! Letters sounds like a really interesting major. I hadn’t heard of it before this class so I’m curious about what it’s about. I think it’s awesome that you decided to pursue a double major. I feel like religious studies will compliment letters very well. Also it was cool to hear that you’ve been trying new foods.
